Welcome to Bangladesh Delta Knowledge Portal

About Delta:

Delta regions are now in the centre of attention because of the vulnerability of the natural and human ecosystems due to climate change and intensive physical interventions. Building up the community`s resilience is necessary in order to adapt with and mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change. Many initiatives have recently been taken to address the critical issues of the Delta region such as the formation of the Delta Alliance (DA) and preparation of Delta Plans etc. The Global Water Partnership (GWP) and the Netherlands International Development Program (DGIS) with technical assistance from the Delta Alliance are developing a global program of action to further the sustainable development of delta ecosystems worldwide. Bangladesh Water Partnership (BWP) is pursuing the GWP initiative for Bangladesh Delta.

Bangladesh Delta:

Bangladesh, the largest delta of the world, is formed by the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and the Meghna Rivers systems. These river systems carry on an average about one and a half billion tons of sediments annually. Its rivers and floodplains make up 80% of the country, support life, livelihoods and the economy. The delta comprises of unique geographical, physiographic and climatic setting with dynamic morphological, hydrological and ecological characteristics as well as constantly changing landscape. Moreover, the country is in the downstream of all river systems and heavily dependent on the water flow from the upstream. The country faces major inter-related delta challenges in water supply, food security and socio-economic development and is prone to natural calamities such as floods, cyclones, and droughts. There is already high pressure on the available land and water resources in the delta.
